Motivation and Staying Motivated during your Job Search

Motivation

Whether you are fresh out of school, changing careers, or have reentered the work force after years of work, you already know how stressful and aggravating job hunting can be. In the face of leads that don't pan out, exhaustive interview structures and the nerve-wracking feeling of waiting for something to happen, you'll find it can be hard to stay motivated and enthusiastic. You'll find, however, that staying motivated is one of the most important parts of your job search and that by simply remembering a few things you can stay on top of what can be a very difficult situation!

The first thing to remember when you are trying to stay motivated while looking for a job is that to eat well. No matter how dire your financial straits don't panic and settle for junk food or fast food. One of the things that can cause depression and a lower degree of enthusiasm is poor nutrition, and if you notice your eating habits have taken a dive since you started the job search, it's time get them back on track. Eat lots of light meals, plan ahead to make your budget count, and don’t skip meals. It can also help to take fresh fruit and some nuts with you for snacks when you go out for interviews.

Another thing to remember is that it helps to keep moving. Even if it is not directly related to your job search, remember that staying active is a good way to keep your energy and enthusiasm high. You'll find that there are many different things that you can do here whether it is in terms of physical movement, by taking a walk or playing basketball, or in terms of mental movement, by reading inspirational or motivational books. Just find something to keep you moving and don’t vegetate. There are many books by Brian Tracy that can help you keep motivated while you learn new methods for managing your time, your life, or your business.

Setting goals and accomplishments is one way to stay motivated. Look at your week and think about what your goals are. Big goals like “Get hired” aren't going to be helpful here, so break them down into smaller, manageable goals. Maybe your big goals for today are to print out ten high-quality copies of your resume and deliver them. The next day can be devoted to getting your resume and profile up on career builder sites and contacting promising leads. Every little bit helps, and you never know when something is going to pan out.

Remember that while your job might be a big part of your life, it should never be your whole life. Realistically, you can only devote so much time to the job hunt. There is no reason to think about it every single hour of every single day. Spending eight hours of your day on your job hunt is plenty, and while you should always keep your budget in mind, remember that you are allowed to spend time with your friends and family and have a good time!

Job hunting can be extremely stressful, but you'll find that there's no need to go overboard. Take things as they come and try to stay calm. The calls will come, it's just a matter what state they'll find you in when they do!

Let’s face it, we don’t exactly jump out of the bed in the morning and yell “Hooray, I get to go looking for a job again!” While a job hunt can give us the thrill of knowing we’re about to begin a new adventure, it can also be disappointing and frustrating if we’re putting in a lot of time but not getting many responses. If this is the case, we may need some help getting motivated. Some motivational readings or recordings can help.

Here are some quick tips for staying motivated.

Keep your goal in mind and a clear mental picture and remind yourself of it often.

Shower and dress for work the first thing in the morning to get into focus.

Begin the day by working on our search, don’t begin the day watching TV because it’s too easy for 1 hour to turn into 4, 5 or more.

Don’t surf the ‘net unless it’s the end of the day. During work hours, do what you need to do online and get off.

Do search related tasks before having fun. Fun is important but it needs to wait.
